IBB’s Cory Channon Explains Why Supporting CCS Makes Sense
On November 28-29, 400 of the world's leading experts on Carbon Capture attended the "Accelerating CCUS" Conference in Edinburgh, UK. Assistant to the International President Cory Channon spoke of the role Boilermakers have in Carbon Capture. Brother Channon explained to the academic, government and business leaders in attendance that Boilermakers work at building, operating and maintaining industrial plants that have global impact on energy needs. From oil & gas, pulp & paper, power production and cement plants to mining, smelters and shipyards, the Boilermakers have a front row view of what is being done and what can be done to help the world reach the Paris Agreement targets. Channon said, "The Boilermakers have a long history of being part of the solutions to the world's industrial challenges."
The Boilermaker trade is leading the way in the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The Boilermakers' unique skills were called upon to help to retro-fit the Boundary Damin Saskatchewan and build the Shell Quest CCS facilityand North West Redwater Sturgeon refinery(both in Alberta).
Brother Channon told the conference participants "The economic benefits of preserving well paid meaningful jobs while cleaning the air is a win-win for everyone".
To engage the attendees in a conversation about the vital role carbon capture and storage must play in mitigating climate change Channon showed the video "CCS: Bridge to a Cleaner Energy Future".
The UK has recognized the potential of Carbon Capture technology in delivering the creation of long term, high value jobs. The International CCS Knowledge Centre in Regina reported that the capital cost to retrofit the coal-fired Shand Power Station in Saskatchewan can be reduced by 67% (with a capture rate of up to 97%) by utilizing the the same carbon capture and storage technology applied to SaskPowers Boundary Dam Station Unit.
The message at the conference was very clear - that without Carbon Capture technology, global targets cannot be achieved. The world is going to need everything to win this battle - wind, solar, hydro, nuclear and carbon capture technologies.
