Lodge 203 Boilermakers: 0.0022% Repair Rate Achieved
In the fall of 2016, Lodge 203 was called into action by the Cahill Group who won the contract to repair the welds of the penstock at the remote location. It created a project that had logistical issues plus, to add to the challenges, they had to deal with a hurricane. Lodge 203 members and Cahill worked together to get the client's facilities back in operation.
The Project Manager for the Cahill Group, Gregory Button, reported to Lodge 203 Business Manager "Final walk thru and signed off of the Bay d'Espoir Penstock repairs; was completed on November 27th, 2016. As you are aware this job ramped up very quickly and had some logistic challenges adding to the demanding schedule. I want to recognize Local 203 members for their work in completing the repairs. The job was completed without any reportable safety incidents and an impressive weld repair rate off 0.0022%. Please express my sincere thanks on behalf of Cahill to the members of Local 203 on a job well done. I look forward to our next challenge."
Lodge 203 Business Manager, Jerry Flaherty, responded to Cahill "Thank you for your kind words, I will send it out to the membership by email this afternoon. I am very proud of the men and women that we dispatched to the Bay d'Espoir Penstock repair job. It was by all accounts a very difficult project and to say that there were some logistical issues is a huge understatement and for good measure thrown in, a hurricane. Our safety culture is very strong in the Boilermakers union and our members take pride in the fact that everybody goes home safe. A safe working environment, no matter the difficulty of the project is the rule and not the exception. The weld repair rate, when I first looked at it, I thought it was a typo! Those weld repair percentages are difficult to get in a shop environment let alone in a Penstock built in the sixties."
