2014 Boilermakers Scholarship Program
International President Newton B. Jones has announced the 2014 Scholarship competition sponsored by the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. In 2014, the Boilermakers will award a total of $12,000 to Canadian Students.
To be eligible, the applicant must be a son, daughter, legally adopted child or dependent of a member in good standing. Applications are limited to high school seniors who will be entering their first year of academic study at a degree-granting, accredited college or university within one year of their high school graduation.
Applications will be accepted between January 1 and March 1, 2014. Applications postmarked after the March 1, 2014 deadline cannot be considered.
Scholarship candidates must submit the following:
- The official Scholarship Application (as revised December, 2013);
- Proof of relationship or dependency to the Boilermaker member;
- The applicant's high school transcript; and
- A 350 word (minimum), typed essay on this year's topic: Identify four or five key improvements unions have made in the lives of U.S. and Canadian workers. Discuss why the improvements are important and how external forces threaten them. Identify and discuss at least two key improvements unions should seek in the future and the challenges they must overcome those improvements.
The Scholarship Committee appointed will review applications and select the winners. The winners will be selected on the basis of a variety of factors, including academic achievement, career goals, extracurricular activities, outside school activities and the applicant's essay.
