2020 is the year Boilermakers start talking about mental health and mental illness. National Director of Health & Safety Jason McInnis is leading a movement within the Boilermakers to provide practical knowledge and skills to address these issues in the workplace.
The Working Mind program was designed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. The objectives of this course are to give members and supervision a greater understanding of:
- The signs & indicators of mental illness and poor mental health;
- The effects of mental illness in the workplace;
- The stigma of mental illness and the barriers to treatment;
- The Mental Health Continuum Model;
- Employees’ and employers’ mental health rights & responsibilities;
- Tools & skills to maintain their own mental health.

There are two programs – one for employees and one for supervision. Brother McInnis and National Health & Safety Representative Blair Allin have been crossing the country providing the training in conjunction with the Steward and Field Supervisor training programs.
