Faced with the daunting challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boilermakers union adapted in winning fashion and convened its 34th Consolidated Convention as a one-day virtual event on July 21, 2021 with a central broadcast from Sterling, Virginia and online participation from delegates of all North American lodges.
Navigating such a new experience was a challenge for all the delegates, but the virtual gathering came off without a hitch, coming to order at 2:00 pm and adjourning at 12:15 am. Business was kept to the essentials, including reports of the Constitution and Law Committee and the Resolutions Committee, followed by discussion and votes on proposed resolutions and constitutional amendments.
In addition, elections for the International Executive Council were held. Brother Jerry Flaherty, Business Manager / Secretary-Treasurer of Lodge 203, had the honour of nominating the full slate of incumbent officers. “Brothers and sisters, this is your Proven Leadership Team,” he said by way of introduction. “They have proven time and again that they work for us and our union’s best interests. They are the right people to have our leadership table today, and they are the right people to have at our leadership table over the next five years.”
The following officers were re-elected to a five-year term:
International President: Newton B. Jones
International Secretary-Treasurer: William T. Creeden
International Vice President – Great Lakes: Lawrence McManamon
International Vice President – Western States: J. Tom Baca
International Vice President – Southeast: Warren Fairley
International Vice President – Northeast: John Fultz
International Vice President – Canada: Arnie Stadnick
“I’ve been more than proud to lead a cohesive group of International Officers known as the Proven Leadership Team,” said International President Newton B. Jones. “We have worked together for you, our members, with one purpose: to help you build and maintain a better, more comfortable life for you and your families — and to preserve the ability of this union to carry on that purpose for the decades to come.”
Brother Tony Andrade, Business Manager / Secretary-Treasurer of District 10 Eastern Canada, participated from Sterling, Virginia as a member of the Constitution and Law Committee. “This convention was a challenge in many ways,” he said. “Was it ideal? Of course not, but it was extremely well put together and professionally handled.” Concerning the IEC elections, Brother Andrade had this to say: “The overwhelming support for IVP Stadnick was not a surprise to me. To become a leader does not occur overnight; it takes time to learn, endure, and overcome challenging times in order to develop the integrity required to lead the membership. Arnie Stadnick has done so admirably.”
