Our nuclear sector is under attack! Please sign our petition

We know how important Canada’s nuclear sector is to our country’s energy needs and to our membership, who represent a large proportion of the tradespeople working in the sector.

But our nuclear sector is now under attack by our own government. Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault — a long-time opponent of nuclear — has decided, without public or scientific consultation, to exclud nuclear energy from the Canada Green Bond Framework, denying the sector the benefit of tens of billions of public and private investment. The repercussions could be disastrous for our energy future and our employment.

Nuclear energy provides about 15% of Canada’s energy — and about 60% of Ontario’s power needs. The sector provides high-quality employment for 76,000 Canadians within a supply chain that is 95% made in Canada, and conforms to the highest regulatory standards.

Nuclear energy is clean energy: it has the lowest impact on the environment because of its energy density, its lack of emissions, and its minimal waste. Nuclear power should rightfully be a major part of our approach to combatting climate change, not a bogeyman to be feared and shunned as we strive toward a greener future.

We urge all members to take a moment to sign the petition linked below, sponsored by Canadians for Nuclear Energy. With your help, we can garner the 10,000 signatures the organization is aiming for. Let’s show Minister Guilbeault that Canadian workers know nuclear is the keystone technology of a clean and just energy transition. The petition will be read in the House of Commons in April by Saskatoon MP Corey Tochor.
